After a rainy weekend with rainfall warnings in effect since Monday morning, Environment Canada has issued a warning for high winds expected in Greater Victoria and the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the early hours of this afternoon. According to Environment Canada, Greater Victoria will experience winds of 40 to 90 kilometers per hour from the west, and winds will increase in the morning as a cold front moves through the area. Winds of 40 to 60 km/h will be prevalent over most of Greater Victoria. However, exposed coastal areas near the strait will experience westerly winds of 60 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h," said a statement from Environment Canada.

Parts of eastern Belleville lost power for more than five hours overnight. Just after 9 p.m. Sunday night, a car crashed into a utility pole in the area of Hastings Drive and Montgomery Boulevard, near McDowell's Independent Grocer. The driver of the dark-colored SUV fled the scene and police are investigating his whereabouts. crews from Elexicon Energy made repairs and restored power around 3 a.m. Monday.

More than 25,000 homes in southwestern British Columbia are without power after a severe storm hit the area overnight. Most of the outages are concentrated in the Lower Mainland, where more than 20,000 customers are without power, according to B.C. Hydro. Much of the North Coast is similarly in the dark until this afternoon because of damage to several critical power lines. Hydro spokesman Kyle Donaldson said emergency crews arriving on the scene found three broken power poles that need to be repaired. In addition, about 3,000 people on Vancouver Island and about 2,000 people in North Vancouver are without power.
